Educational Objectives and Outcomes

Educational Objectives

ELEN-EO-01. Depth. To produce graduates who have a fundamental knowledge needed for the practice, or advanced study in, electrical engineering. Our graduates will receive an emphasis in at least two of the following four application areas: electric power, communications, controls, and microelectronics.

ELEN-EO-02. Breadth. To produce graduates who have a broad education necessary for productive careers or the pursuit of graduate education, including a knowledge of important current issues in electrical engineering.

ELEN-EO-03. Professionalism. To produce graduates who have strong communications skills, who understand and undertake professional ethical responsibilities, and who function effectively as members and leaders of multi-disciplinary teams.

ELEN-EO-04. Lifelong Learning. To produce graduates who believe that their undergraduate electrical engineering education was a wise investment and who continue to develop their knowledge and skills after graduation.

Program Outcomes

The Electrical Engineering Program attempts to instill the following program outcomes in its graduates:

ELEN-PO-01. [Engineering Criterion 3(a)] An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering to the analysis of electrical engineering problems.

ELEN-PO-02. [Engineering Criterion 3(b)] An ability to design and conduct scientific and engineering experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.

ELEN-PO-03. [Engineering Criterion 3(c)] An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs.

ELEN-PO-04. [Engineering Criterion 3(d)] An ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams.

ELEN-PO-05. [Engineering Criterion 3(e)] An ability to identify, formulate, and solve electrical engineering problems.

ELEN-PO-06. [Engineering Criterion 3(f)] An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.

ELEN-PO-07. [Engineering Criterion 3(g)] An ability to communicate by conveying technical material through both the formal written medium and through oral presentation with audience interaction.

ELEN-PO-08. [Engineering Criterion 3(h&j)] The broad education and a knowledge of contemporary issues necessary to understand the impact of electrical engineering solutions in a global and societal context.

ELEN-PO-09. [Engineering Criterion 3(i)] A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning.

ELEN-PO-10. [Engineering Criterion 3(k)] An ability to use the techniques, skills and modern engineering tools, including computer-based tools, necessary for engineering practice.

ELEN-PO-11. [Electrical Engineering Criterion] A demonstrated knowledge of advanced mathematics. This includes differential equations, linear algebra, complex variables, and discrete mathematics.

ELEN-PO-12. [Electrical Engineering Criterion] A knowledge of probability and statistics, including electrical engineering applications.

The undergraduate Electrical Engineering curriculum is a carefully planned program of study designed to meet the challenges of expanding professional opportunities. From foundations in the basic sciences of mathematics, physics and chemistry, the program progresses through the engineering sciences to emphasize the roles of mechanics, thermodynamics, and electrical theory in the analysis, synthesis, design, and operation of engineering devices and systems. A coordinated laboratory program utilizing modern equipment and facilities seeks to supplement classroom instruction, stimulate creativity, and further professional competence. Finally, a variety of courses selected to provide an adequate humanistic and cultural background is included to insure both the recognition and fulfillment of the engineer's responsibilities as a citizen.

The curriculum is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC-ABET for Electrical Engineering, TAC-ABET for Electrical Engineering Technology). Graduation from an ABET accredited program is one of the requirements for qualifying as a Registered Professional Engineer in Louisiana as well as most other states. If, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements established for an ABET accredited curriculum, a graduate has maintained a relatively good scholastic record, the graduate may qualify for further study in the advanced degree program.
