General Requirements for MS programs
|
Thesis Option
In addition
to any required remedial course work not taken for graduate
credit, the student will be required to complete a minimum
of 30 semester credit hours (SCH) for graduate credit,
of which a maximum of 6 hours will be earned in research
and thesis. A minimum of 15 hours must be earned in courses
open only to graduate students.
Non Thesis Option
A minimum
of 36 SCH of graduate course work will be required, of
which 3 SCH shall involve a practicum on an advanced topic
approved by the student's advisory committee. The student
must indicate his/her preference for the non thesis option
during the first quarter of graduate enrollment when his/her
Plan of Study is submitted.
Individual Requirements for MS programs
Individual programs may, upon approval by the Dean of the College
of Engineering and Science, impose additional requirements,
such as written comprehensive exams.

Baccalaureate and Master’s Program
Concurrent Enrollment
Undergraduate seniors who are within
30 semester hours of completing the requirements for the baccalaureate
degree and have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.2
on all undergraduate work attempted may be allowed to register
for graduate credit if they meet the criteria described in the
University
Catalog under the same heading as this section. A maximum
of 12 semester credits of graduate course work can be earned
while completing baccalaureate requirements.

Dual-Degree Programs
Students have the option of being
concurrently enrolled in more than one graduate degree program.
The Graduate School policies concerning dual matriculation are
described in the University
Catalog under “Dual Degree Programs.”
The following policies apply to students who wish to take advantage
of this provision in the College of Engineering & Science.
- Separate application and admission
to each degree program is required. Each degree program will
have separate Plans of Study and Advisory Committees (committee
membership does not have to be mutually exclusive). Courses
taken can be applied towards both degrees if they are listed
on the respective Plans of Study and receive approval as being
appropriate for the given degree programs.
- For PhD students pursuing the concurrent
enrollment provision to earn an MS degree, the PhD will be designated
as the primary program and the MS will be the secondary program.
The degree for the secondary program can be awarded at the same
time as, or after, the completion of the primary degree.
- PhD students who decide to earn an
MS degree after beginning their doctoral studies can, once admitted
to the MS program, use appropriate courses from the PhD Plan
of Study on their MS Plan of Study, with the approval of the
MS advisory committee. There is no limit on the number of courses
that can be used for this purpose.

Policies regarding Transfer Credits
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) requires
that at least 50% of the total semester hours for a degree be
earned from the degree-granting institution.
1. Doctoral degrees
Upon approval of the department involved, there would be no
limit at the doctoral level regarding transferring courses for
degree credit, except that set by SACS (see above). The grade
earned must be "B" or above, and the credits must
be accepted as applicable to the degree program by the student's
academic college. No transfer credit for extension courses will
be accepted. The request for transfer credit is initiated by
the student through the advisor and the Director of Graduate
Studies of the college. Transfer credit from non-U.S. institutions
may require the evaluation of transcripts by an external agency.
The final approval of transfer credit rests with the Dean of
Graduate School.
2. Master’s degrees
Upon approval of the department involved, a maximum of 12 semester
hours of graduate resident credit, or 1/3 of the hours required
for the master's degree, may be transferred for degree credit
from a U. S. regionally accredited college or university. The
grade earned must be "B" or above, and the credits
must be accepted as applicable to the master's degree program
by the student's academic college. No correspondence credits
are applicable toward a master's degree. Transfer credit for
graduate courses will be posted on the student's transcript
only by written request from the student's graduate committee
chairperson and approved by the college graduate director. Transfer
credit will be posted only for courses listed on the student's
approved plan of study.
3. Second Master’s degrees
A student pursuing a second master's
degree must earn a minimum of 15 additional graduate hours at
Louisiana Tech and must satisfy the requirements for a minimum
number of exclusive graduate courses, in addition to the thesis
or practicum if required, to be taken in the area in which the
second degree is being earned. Some colleges may require more
than 15 hours. Transfer hours will not be approved on a second
master's degree.
